I regret to say my experience has not been as great as others. I came to Clare Mutual because they provide Home insurance with a mini-split heating system as primary heat source. They inspected my home, recommended certain changes, including getting my wood stove insert 'certified'. In the meantime, I was told not to use the stove, which was reasonable, and I assured them I would not, and I have not used it all winter. It has tho proved impossible to certify, due to it's age, so I had planned to replace it next year, but thought I was fine, as long as I 'did not use it', as instructed. However, NOW, within 4 weeks of renewal, I get a registered letter, to say they will not renew unless I remove the flue & seal it off. How do you remove the flue from an insert? You actually have to remove the stove! How do you seal it off? They offer no specifics as to what that means, and therefore I have no faith that once I DO block off the flue in some manner that they won't say 'no good- you can undo that at any time!". I have owned this home for 11 years, and owned others for even longer, and NEVER had a claim, yet despite the low risk they have no faith in me, and ask unreasonable measures, lacking common sense. Their underwriter it seems sets arbitrary rules without specifics, makes the decisions, but you can never talk with him to resolve issues. Otherwise, their prices are good, and staff is pleasant, so that gets them 1 star. I will spend my $3000/yr insurance elsewhere.
