The first involved a lawsuit that I was attempting to collect on. The process took roughly 10 years, with the lawyer consistently complaining about the courts not holding the individual accountable. This certainly seems reasonable considering the current climate of the legal system; however, nothing ever seemed to get done. Fees were being dispersed out of my account for tracers with no success. I finally took it upon myself and googled the individual and found the information I needed quite quickly. This led to being able to finally resolve the suit. I still wonder to this day what these tracers did and why the lawyer seemed incapable of collecting on this case. My sneaking suspicion is that there was not enough money in it for the firm.
My second experience involved what I thought was a straightforward real estate transaction. I had purchased a home from Granite developments and Granite simply refused to abide by the terms of the contract. The lawyer from Moreilli was floored and stated that this was a very common purchase contract, and had no idea why Granite would do this. He claimed that he knew the lawyer on the other side and that he would take care of it. After he got nowhere with the lawyer on the other side he advised me that I was going to start running up a bill with the firm. At this point, I told him to stop. Long story short, again, the lawyer at Moreilli was unable to hold the other side accountable for the contact and seemed incapable of doing so. When I went to pay my bill, it had risen to over $1000 more than the traditional ~$2200 cost for purchasing a home. Surprisingly, he informed me anything outside pretty much just doing paperwork was not included in real estate purchases -who knew! His response? That he could have charged me more and that he did me a favour. Naturally, I asked for a receipt for the extra fees that I somehow had incurred. I fought for 6 months to get this receipt with no luck. At this point, I emailed a partner, Greg Thompson and I received the receipt the next day. The receipt had all the fees lumped together and was nearly impossible to decipher the extra fees. After many emails back and forth (with the partner CCed), the lawyer demonstrated how he had charged the extra fees (with times spent on various tasks which as impossible to verify of course). The issue was, however, that he seemed to manipulate his receipt to show the extra amount that I was charged as being a smaller amount than I paid, ~$600 vs the ~$1000 I was charged. After confronting him and the partner on this, I never heard back. At this point, the extra effort was certainly not worth the amount of money I could potentially get back. It was clear that these facts did not bother the partner and I finally dropped it.
In my opinion, I would not use these guys. Their lawyers dont seem to know how to hold other parties accountable to basic terms within contracts. I wouldnt go as far as to say they are ripping off their clients, but their fees are certainly not transparent. If you do decide to go with Moreilli make sure EVERYTHING is on paper. With every word spoken to the firm you should ask the question, am I being charged for this?
