I filed my 2019 tax return with journals, and it will be my last. First off, we hired the original owner Nick to do our taxes, as he has done my husbands for a few years. somehow we got passed off to his junior associate (his daughter Jennifer) without even being asked. Unfortunately, there must not have been great communication between the two because Nick was explained in detail how my paperwork was done up and we got confirmation that the way it was done, was done correctly. A few weeks after the information was dropped off we got an email stating that I was getting a return, which struck us as odd where we havent paid in, and were waiting on journals to tell us what money had to go where(hst ei etc). My husband called right away to question why there was a return when we had yet to pay in, and Jennifer explained that everything had been taken care of and it was all paid. Fast forward to dec 2020, I have a letter from CRA saying I owe almost $3000. So my husband called journals and asked what happened, after a few hours they called back and said Jennifer had taken my paperwork and submitted numbers we had told Nick specifically not to input as we had the money at home to pay everything once they told us how much went where. Being in customer service I was expecting and apology and a refund for the money paid for lack of service we received. Not only did I not get an apology or a refund but I was told as a business owner its my responsibility to know what numbers go where and I should have caught that and corrected the mistake before it was submitted. Moral of my story is, if you dont know anything about accounting dont go to journals, apparently you have to have an accounting degree to guarantee you wont end up in my situation.
