My review is long overdue but we enjoyed our visit with Mark and Ugo so much that I wanted to make sure I still took the time to share how great our experience here was, despite it being a little late!
My husband and I were driving between the Niagara Falls region and Toronto with our dog back in October 2022 and wanted to taste what Canadian wines are like at a winery that was dog friendly. Not being locals, we turned to google maps to try to find a good place. Well if you're reading this review to try to narrow down your options much like we did, then you probably know that there are a bajillion wineries in this area with great reviews. It's hard to really know what your experience will be like until you get there because they all seem quite similar on first glance. We first stopped at a different winery, and while the wine was alright and the views were pretty, we were somewhat underwhelmed. It's not that anyone was rude or there was anything bad to say in particular, but it was just- meh. After that, we were just going to drive on to our destination for the evening but decided at the last minute to check out ONE more winery before dinner (it was just a little early to eat and we wanted something else to do for another 30 minutes or so). Villa Romana Estate Winery was open and right on the way and seemed to also have great reviews, so we pulled in and parked thinking, well, if it's anything like the last place, we can just try a couple more Canadian wines while looking up a place to eat.
I should also note: we had NO NEED to buy any wine at all. We had plenty excellent wines in our home collection, and besides, my husband generally prefers craft beers on most occasions. We were mostly just visiting wineries for the experience while we were in the area. Well, the Villa Romana experience and wine were both so lovely that we ended up buying several bottles and spending nearly 2 hours with Mark and Ugo, i believe beyond their closing time. This is saying something, because 1) neither of us particularly enjoy spending a lot of time with new people (i'd blame COVID but actually our social skills were probably always a little lacking hahaha); and 2) I am prone to hunger-induced anger, and like i said, we were on our way to dinner and had only planned to stay about 30 minutes at most.
Not only did Mark NOT judge us for our social skills, but he made us feel so comfortable that we felt no need to hide that we are not wine connoisseurs (yes, i looked up how to spell that). He let us try several different kinds of wines, gave us his personal take on each one, and shared his family's history as well as the future plans for the winery. We joked about what notes of made up flavors our undeveloped taste buds might be fake-tasting, and more seriously talked about which wines we liked best and why on a layman's level (though i have no doubt that this family can also cater professionally to those of you who are actual connoisseurs).
Mark's father, Ugo, also stopped by a little later and joined in our conversation. Well, turns out, we shared a mutual interest in shotgun shooting. So not only did we talk about wine, but also why i prefer the swing and weight of an over-under to a semi-automatic, the difference between skeet and trap, and Ugo's hunting and fishing conquests. We didn't even notice how much time had passed until my stomach started really growling at me and we realized it was getting darker and colder. It had been past closing time for awhile, but they never made us feel hurried or like we were in their way. This visit was genuinely one of my favorite memories from visiting Canada. Mark & Ugo, I hope you contact us if you ever come down to North Carolina! I'd love to go shooting with you guys :)
