We recently had a telephone consultation with Accountants on Main. We are a retired couple, not business owners, and we had a very specific question about how much RRSP to withdraw. During the call, the accountant asked us to excuse any silence while she worked on the numbers (so it didn't appear much pre-work was done). The call lasted 28 minutes. A week later, we had a follow up call because of a question regarding her calculations. That call lasted just under 10 minutes. We were disappointed, therefore, to receive an invoice of $400 for the 38 minutes total! When we voiced our concern, they applied a $50 discount. Still, with HST, we paid $400. For 38 minutes of consultation. We had a consultation with them a few years ago and they pro-rated their hourly fee for the actual duration of the call. That was our expectation this time but we had an expensive lesson to always ask first.
