This review will never improve a broken system. As a family member of someone who has experienced the Champlain Home and Community Care Support system, I feel compelled to share my thoughts and observations in a balanced and fair manner. It is essential to recognize the efforts of the dedicated medical practitioners working within this system, as they are undoubtedly doing their best to navigate a challenging and often inefficient structure. The medical practitioners within Champlain Home and Community Care Support deserve praise for their commitment and professionalism. They continuously strive to provide quality care to their patients, often under less than ideal circumstances. It is crucial to acknowledge their hard work and perseverance within a broken system that offers limited scope and resources. Unfortunately, it seems that the government's focus on pouring funds into administrative aspects of the healthcare system has led to a lack of support for the individuals who need it most. In my father's case, the delayed and inadequate home healthcare provided was a clear reflection of this issue. As a result, his health suffered significantly, and we were left feeling disappointed and let down by the system. Moreover, despite the considerable investment in research, staff, outreach, and intake, the various departments within the Champlain Home and Community Care Support system appear to be constrained by their own narrow silos. This fragmentation prevents a holistic understanding of a patient's complex health needs and impedes the delivery of effective and timely care. The lack of accountability and absence of a feedback loop exacerbate the situation further. It is disheartening to know that our concerns may not be addressed or even acknowledged by the administration. The continued funding of an inefficient, siloed system only serves to perpetuate its flaws, rather than promoting improvement and innovation. It is indeed a blessing to have access to free healthcare in our country, but the management of these systems leaves much to be desired. A cumbersome bureaucracy and excessive rules and regulations hamper the provision of quality healthcare, ultimately affecting patients and their families. While the medical practitioners within the Champlain Home and Community Care Support system should be commended for their dedication and expertise, the overarching structure they operate within requires significant reform. It is imperative that the government and administration prioritize the needs of patients and their families, streamline processes, and foster greater collaboration among departments. Only through such comprehensive changes can we hope to achieve a more efficient and effective healthcare system.

My daughter has been subject to neglect and abuse by the Champlain LHIN for many years. Now she is a patient at the Royal Ottawa Hospital due to trumped up charges (refusal of care). What care I say? She never did receive proper home care from the PSWs sent to her home. First she was brought to the Ottawa Civic Hospital by the Ottawa Police under a Form 1. The Civic didn't want her, so they sent her to the Royal Ottawa Hospital. The Royal is a mental hospital. They weren't aware that my daughter also has Multiple Sclerosis, and required more care than they were used to giving patients. My daughter is almost blind, immobile, and incontinent. Again she is being subject to disrespect, abuse, and neglect. I am my daughter's Substitute Decision Maker. The challenge is great! When I complain to the Patient Care Office at the Royal, I may as well be talking to the wall. Nothing improves. In fact things are getting worse! If my daughter dares to speak out she is locked in her room. The place is run like a prison! My daughter wants out! Can anyone please help me? If she had been receiving proper "Home Care" from the "Champlain LHIN" and the "PSWs" sent to her home, SUPPOSEDLY to care for her, she wouldn't be where she is now. PSWs are not trained properly. There is no way that PSWs can be compared to Registered Nurses. They seem to be lacking compassion. They just don't have what it takes. Who is going to take the responsibility of training PSWs properly? I am at my wits end! I think we should take out a Class Action Lawsuit against the care delivered by the Champlain LHIN and their hired caregivers. Is anyone interested? Thank you for reading.

I've alway found them well intentioned and (mostly) well organised. My dad requires regular catheter changes and other supports. He was assigned a regular nurse that handles this. We had a telephone conversation with a care coordinator and immediately (2-3 days!) thereafter a PWS showed up to help with my dad's morning routine 5 days a week (oddly we got no notice, no confirmation as to who would show up, no contact numbers or anything....person is nice and helpful though). When we started inquiring about the Long Term Care process a care coordinator showed up a week later and provided the paperwork and walked us through the process. Given a health care system which is stressed out and a populace that is unwilling to stomach higher taxes I thought the process worked pretty well. People have to be willing to take on more responsibility for their family members or stop belly-aching about how we aren't getting silver-plated care.
