I have had my income tax filed by BDO Orangeville for the last 20 years. I am a firm believer in supporting local business. I was recently informed by BDO that they have changed their fees and that it would now cost me a minimum of 333.00 more to pay for my taxes. They now charge a minimum of $750.00 per couple, regardless of how complicated your taxes might be. The individual that I spoke to confirmed that our taxes were quite simple to file. When I questioned the fee I was told that there was a labour shortage and that BDO Orangeville was geared towards clients whose returns were more labour intensive, "corporate type returns" and that their fees were hiked to accommodate these type of returns. When I explained that our taxes would probably take about an hour to file and that they didn't warrant a minimum 80% increase, I was told that I was informed in advance of the hike, and that I could take my taxes elsewhere (which I will be doing in the furture). I fully understand the current post-Covid situation that we are in, where businesses can't find people to work, but I don't think that you should turn away individuals who supported a business when it wasn't so large and helped it to establish itself. My suggestion to anyone who is a small fry like me, take your business elsewhere, BDO doesn't want your money or your custom. The old values of loyalty to a local business no longer exist.
