Dr. Hamilton is a specialist in Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery. After completing that specialized training in Ontario he then undertook an extended course in Skin Cancer Management in Australia. He is a HIGHLY qualified skin cancer specialist, and you aren't going to find better in Toronto or Ottawa, or indeed likely anywhere else. It is unusual for such a specialized and highly skilled surgeon to be performing what is often rather routine basal cell skin cancer removals. Equally, and perhaps more unusual is for residents of somewhere like Peterborough to have direct local access to this level of specialty service, without having to travel to Toronto or elsewhere, or having to wait to see a visiting specialist during his/her once a month (or every few months) clinic day in Peterborough. We are very fortunate to have Dr. Hamilton and this level of skin cancer care right here in Peterborough; which IS as it should be, but far too often isn't the case under Ontario Ministry of Health funding, and health care distribution and rationing. And, call it what you want, but it IS rationing, and more, when the Greater Peterborough Area (Peterborough, CKL, Haliburton, Northumberland) - pop. 300,000 - has either long waits to access the 1 or 2 specialists of a particular kind here in Peterborough, or have no local access at all and must travel to the GTA, Kingston, or elsewhere. Now ... On to actually "reviewing" Dr. Hamilton: A relative was recently referred to Dr. Hamilton by a local dermatologist. She was seen within a month of the referral, and Dr. Hamilton performed surgery, on the first visit, to remove facial basal cell carcinoma. ALL aspects of the initial consultation, surgery, and follow-up were excellent, professional, and indeed left the patient feeling that she had the best care that could be had anywhere. She was quite anxious about the surgery -- particularly being performed under local anaesthetic and on her face -- but found Dr. Hamilton to be very reassuring, skilled and efficient. He asked her what music she liked, and when she said ABBA he quickly found ABBA on his mp3 player and had that on for her to listen to while he performed the procedure. In follow-up with her family doctor (to remove the sutures) he (the FD) commented on the unusually excellent performance of the suturing by the surgeon. The FD was interested/impressed by the TYPE or technique of suturing that had been performed. And, as I expected would be the case, he commented that there will likely be no scarring visible at all within a few months. I'm not sure if Dr. Hamilton sees any patients other than those with skin cancer and/or if he is part of the local ENT on-call schedule for emergency patients, but rest assured whether you or your family member see him related to skin cancer, general ENT, or other Head & Neck surgical issues, you won't find better surgical care elsewhere. While Peterborough and area is grossly UNDERserved in a variety of areas of practice we are, nevertheless, fortunate in having some of the best of the best of the medical doctors and surgeons that we DO have.
