We decided to get a wheelchair ramp and have it installed in our garage. Doing our research, we found there are different products available from various suppliers. The prices vary based on the type of ramp, the material, the length and the incline. We wanted one that had railings and was strong enough and wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair, a scooter and a walker. We knew there is a recommended incline/run of 1 inch of rise for every 12 inches of length. One important point we did not know is the need for a platform surface at the top of the ramp to prevent the user from sliding back down while opening the door to get into the house. We got a referral and contacted James at 101 Mobility in Pickering. We visited the showroom and talked with him and decided to buy the ramp he recommended. Very few suppliers would have a ramp available for display so you could be buying the product sight unseen. 101 Mobility had a rental which we were able to see. We were concerned about the surface material of the ramp and whether it would be slippery when wet. The ramp had horizontal ridges which prevents the user from slipping and is better than a black rubber coating which would wear away. The one we chose is made of aluminium, 3 foot wide, 11 foot long with railings on both sides. At the top of the ramp, there is a 4 foot by 5 foot platform. The ramp was made in the US. Because it was mid December it took three weeks for the ramps to be delivered to the supplier. Installation was done in early January and took two hours to complete. The job was perfect. The ramp is level with the threshold and strong and anchored into the wall and floor. We have had the ramp for several weeks and are happy with it the service provided by 101 Mobility Pickering.
