When I enrolled at Kumon I was starting my first semester of Grade 11 and am now transitioning into my senior year. I began at the lowest level and worked on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division first. Then I progressed onto long division then fractions and eventually factoring. As I worked through these booklets I found that I was slowly becoming more confident in my math skills. I began to raise my hand more in class and not being afraid to say the wrong answer.
A lot of the booklets I worked on strengthened my foundation of math skills. My mental math wasn't good and I had never learned my multiplication table. I lacked foundational skills that were stopping me from fully understanding all of the math that was being taught to me in class.
In grade 9 I had finished with a 63%. This summer I retook a grade 10 academic class and finished with a 93% (when I took it during school I had an 81%) and finished my advanced functions class with a 90%. I am now planning to take a 12U calculus and a 12U advanced functions class. I've definitely come a long way and I have a much better grasp on understanding math!
During covid my math skills had also started to slip even more as I prefer working in a school environment rather than online. It was hard to focus and fully understand the concepts that were being taught to me.
Although a lot of the students are younger children, Kumon is great for people of any age! It's never too late to strengthen your math skills.
The staff are also all extremely friendly and make it a very welcoming and warm environment. They were all kind and even allowed me to come in before operating hours to work on my worksheets.
