My husband gave me and my mother a groupon for High Tea for Two at Wonderland Tea Room and Bake Shop. I made the reservation ahead of time by email, with the owner I assume. Her correspondence with me in making the reservation was rather unwelcoming--there was no "we look forward to seeing you" etc. It was curt and business like. Regardless, the reservation was scheduled for Feb. 22 at 12:30pm and my 84 year old mother and I were looking forward to our outing. We arrived right on time. There was no staff member to be seen. We waited and waited and finally I went to the back to alert someone that we were here. The woman told us their door bell is broken so they didn't hear us come in. We had already seated ourselves by this point. I showed the server our groupon and she asked if we had a reservation. I said yes but she wasn't aware of our reservation. I even showed her the email correspondence with Lori McClymont. She told us they could prepare our food in 10 or 15 minutes. I was concerned we wouldn't get the full experience because they weren't prepared for us but we were assured this wouldn't be a problem because they were already preparing food for the weekend rush. Apparently Fridays aren't busy and the weekends are. We were asked what type of tea we wanted and then if we wanted a raisin or plain scone. We both chose raisin. Then she came back and said they only had plain. I had previously asked if they served Devonshire Cream with the scones, as typically that is standard for any High Tea I've attended. I was told it is $2/person extra. Since they didn't have the raisin scones I asked if we could have the Devonshire cream free of charge and they did accommodate our request. Our food arrived fairly quickly. We had totally finished before the server came to ask if we wanted more water added to our teapots. By this time it was too late as we were ready to go. At no time did the server check in with us to see how our food was. The desserts were disappointing, the sandwiches ok and the scone was good. I feel as though something was lost in the experience because we weren't expected. I understand mistakes happen and reservations get lost but at no point was there ever an apology or discussion of compensation. I would not recommend this venue for High Tea. Even if the customer service was better, I don't feel it was good value for the money.
