1) They no longer make their chocolate hazelnut filled chocolate chip cookie tarts. Those were smart treats to make (although $16 ish) yet they discontinued them in favour of...other stuff...
2) They make dry cakes (a small sprinkled cake we bought for a birthday had both dry icing and a dry interior, and costed way too much to begin with).
3) They no longer sell monster cookies.
4) Some things you cannot justify having at such a high price, such as a small cupcake or a pack of cookies. I could make a bigger batch of quality cookies for less.
5) Quality and portion size has gone down and prices continue to climb up. Ridiculous to see the "prepared" meal trays with barely any meat protein in them have such a high price for something that is half starch/vegetables. It is so insulting. Pasta with a few chunks of meat? Be ready to pay over $20 for what they say is over 300g...
6) Produce is OK at times but I don't buy it here, it isn't the best.
Meats are also not the freshest despite looking well packaged.
7) Staff at the checkouts barely smile or are perhaps looking for the best dressed customers (we are not in suits or collared shirts or fashionable some days, but we do not dress like slobs) to treat with respect. Last time last weekend, cashier did not smile or say anything except "bag?" as if we were the "foreign" ones. I was in ordinary hiking gear, runners, and sunglasses. I am from Toronto, live and will die in Toronto. If you have judgmental/upset staff with attitude problems, fire them now and hire some happy people who live nearby and need a job to keep busy. There are plenty of those types around here
What is positive about Summerhill Market:
1) At lunch, they have interesting hot table items to choose from as "grab and go" which are fair. The chicken patty was weird though... is that even meat? Who knows, it looks very scrambled inside.
2) Try their soft Focaccia bread.
3) Their service at checkout is efficient, even with a big line of people, you will be out in 2 minutes!
4) Their pastas are good but ridiculous in price most of the time.
5) The way they wrap their raw chicken and beef (area closest to produce aisles) is beautifully done and very classy (made me want to purchase 4 chicken breasts in a package because of how nice the packaging was). Very clean, good quality meats as well.
Overall, Summerhill Market should bring some of their good products back and stop charging "rosedale style inflation" prices for the smallest items. Train some positive staff instead of the deadbeats you have on the front line. Can't believe every time I come here there's always a sad cashier who hates their job.
