Its pretty exceptional to find a business that actively seeks NOT to be part of its surrounding community and neighborhood. Enter Fabrik8. Aside from the fact that its generally a weird and creepy place - and thats even measured by standards of innovation and coworking centers - its uninviting in every way for the community it plopped down in. Now Fabrik8 wants to expand and theyre going to need to do so on the communitys terms or the expansion either wont happen or will be significantly more onerous and expensive than theyve accounted for. How to fix this? It would be easy, were different people running this place: Dont charge insane hourly rates for hockey ice rental. Allow the public to actually sit and drink a coffee in your lobby. Allow non-members to join the gym - and about a dozen other quick fixes that might make the neighborhood embrace you rather than view you as they presently do. They wont do any of these things and their expansion is going to - as everything else does here - be far more complicated than anticipated. Update: The Fabrik8 team is so gross. The day before the public vote on their explanation plans, they went door-to-door in the neighborhood with their Hey - nothing to see here - dont vote tomorrow! pamphlet and straight-up lies.
